Research
Nathan Hoffmann is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Emory University. He completed his PhD in Sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 2025, where he also obtained master’s degrees in Statistics and Sociology. He additionally holds an MSc degree in Social Policy and Social Research from University College London and BA degrees in French and Music from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Using the cases of sexuality and education, Dr. Hoffmann’s research seeks to understand how state policies and other national institutions affect the well-being and decisions of immigrants. His work has examined the education of young migrants, the migration and union formation of queer people, and ramifications of immigrant legal status. He also engages in methodological work on recent advances in statistics and machine learning. His research has appeared in peer-reviewed journals such as Social Forces, International Migration Review, and Population Research and Policy Review.
