Admissions and Financial Support

Admissions

  • We typically admit about 5 graduate students every year, for full-time study only. Applications for the coming academic year are to be submitted by December 15, 2023.
  • Admission decisions are based on previous academic record, letters of recommendation, a writing sample, GRE scores, relevant personal experience, and the personal statement.
  • Evidence of prior research and background in sociology are very desirable but not required.
  • We welcome applications from international students, and we have admitted students from Brazil, China, Germany, Greece, India, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, Ukraine, and other countries. Students whose native language is not English should submit evidence that they can converse and do research in English and provide TOEFEL scores.
  • Students enter in the Fall semester of the academic year.

Financial Support

  • All admitted students receive offers of financial assistance, normally comprising full tuition grants, fellowships, health insurance subsidies, and teaching/research assistantships.
  • Standard awards require students to work during the academic year, assisting with faculty research and teaching.
  • Stipend awards represent a commitment of support for five years of study, contingent upon a student maintaining normal progress toward the Ph.D. degree.
  • For 2023-24, the standard stipend level is $36,376 plus 100% coverage of health insurance premiums.
  • Exceptional applicants may be eligible for special fellowships awarded through the Laney Graduate School -- including the George W. Woodruff Fellowship, the Centennial Scholars Fellowship, and the Laney Graduate School Fellowship. All applicants are automatically considered for all awards.
