Joint Sociology/Religion Major
This joint major is an option for students with strong interests in both fields. It is intended to show how the theoretical and methodological resources of sociology can aid in the study of religious traditions, and how insights gleaned from the study of religion can enrich a sociological understanding of culture.
Description:
1. A minimum of 56 hours (14 regular courses)
a. 16 hours (4 courses):2. The course work of individual students should be organized in consultation with an adviser.b. 32 hours (8 regular courses) from the two departments:
- One course selected from REL 301-320
- REL 300
- One course selected from SOC 201, 214, or 245
- SOC 355 or SOC 355WR
c. 8 hours (2 courses):
- REL 490
- Three courses in Religion, two at the 300 level or higher
- SOC 221 or SOC 333
- SOC 457WR
- Two courses in Sociology at the 200 level or higher
- Two courses from either or both of the two departments, at least one at the 200 level or higher
3. Honors in the joint major may be earned by satisfying the honors requirements of either department.
