Department of Sociology - Emory University

Peer Mentoring

A select group of senior sociology majors serve as peer mentors to younger sociology majors, minors, and those interested in majoring or minoring in sociology.

You can contact the peer mentors using Learnlink. Search Public Conferences for the Sociology Conference and post your questions on the Ask the Mentors subconference.

Peer mentors are able to answer questions on a wide variety of topics, including questions about:
  • the major and minor in sociology
  • the pros and cons of double majoring
  • internships, studying abroad, favorite classes
  • post-college career plans
  • making the transition from Oxford to Emory
  • the Honors Program in sociology

The peer mentors' interests cover our major areas in sociology (e.g., criminology, law, public health, political sociology, social psychology, communications and journalism, public policy, and medicine).

Below is the list of peer mentors and their interests.

 Max Blau

Hey everyone, I'm a senior from Winnetka, IL (just outside Chicago). I'm double majoring in Sociology and Economics. While I am not particularly sure what I will be doing after next year, I am looking at either going to graduate school, or working in something related to music or non-profits. While I have taken a variety of Sociology classes, my interests lie in cultural/mass media industries, with a focus on the music industry. I am happy to answer any questions you may have about the honors thesis process, research, classes, or about the sociology major in general. The soc classes I've taken are:
  • SOC 214: Class, Status, and Power (Condron)
  • SOC 221: Culture and Society (Schmutz)
  • SOC 245: Individual and Society (Hegtvedt)
  • SOC 343: Mass Media and Social Influences (Dowd)
  • SOC 370A: Community Building and Social Change (Rich)
  • SOC 355WR: Social Research I (Michalec)
  • SOC 443S: Sociology of Music (Dowd)

This upcoming year, I will be working on an honors thesis, with Dr. Timothy Dowd as my advisor, discussing sound quality in audio recordings over time, and its impact on consumers. As a part of this, I will be taking SOC495A, SOC495BWR, and Basic Theoretical Problems (SOC 540; in place of SOC 457) over the next year. Feel free to send me an email with any questions you may have. I hope you all have a great year!

Chelsea Gatcliffe

Hi everyone! My name is Chelsea Gatcliffe and I am a Senior sociology major from Trinidad & Tobago. I am also pre-med and plan on graduating this December. I studied abroad in June 2008 with the Comparative Health Care Systems Program in London with Dr. Scott and Dr. Archibald.  I had a fantastic experience so if you have any questions about that program, please ask!

I have taken:
  • SOC 230: Sociological Aspects of Health and Illness (Levinson)
  • SOC 245: Individual & Society (Hegtvedt)
  • SOC 266: Global Change (Lechner)
  • SOC 330: Mental Health & Well Being (Keyes)
  • SOC 355WR: Social Research I (Mullis)
  • SOC 389: Economic Development in Africa (Cherribi)
  • SOC 390: Comparative Health Care Systems (London Study Abroad Program)

and I will be taking SOC 457(WRT): Development of Sociological Theory with Steidl this semester.

As I am pre-med my interests are primarily medical sociology and health care systems. I also considered being a Global Health minor so I know quite a bit about that as well.

Please feel free to email me with any questions you may have. Have a great semester!!

Joanna Hull

Hey everyone! My name is Joanna, and I am a senior studying sociology and global health.  I spent my first two years at Oxford College getting my Associates in Arts degree.  I took all five of Dr. McQuaide’s sociology courses, and received the sociology award when I graduated in 2008.  My Ecuador paper focused on US health care systems, and my social problems paper focuse d on US educational systems.  I took:

  • SOC_OX 101: Introduction to Sociology
  • SOC_OX 230: Sociological Aspects of Health & Illness
  • SOC_OX 231R: Social Change in Developing Societies (or the Ecuador class)
  • SOC_OX 348: Old People in Society (with the TPSL component at local nursing homes)
  • SOC_OX 215N: Social Problems (in Atlanta).

Since I transferred to Emory College, I have taken:

  • SOC 221: Culture & Society (Scott)
  • SOC 266: Global Change (Lechner)
  • SOC 355: Social Research I (Scott)
This fall, as a senior, I will be completing my soc major by taking SOC 457: Development of Sociological Theory.  As a senior, I have also elected to complete the Program in Social Research and Data Analysis (PSRDA), in which I take SOC 500: Research Methods-Statistics (graduate level statistics course) and complete quantitative research in exchange for a specialized certificate.

Besides classes, I have many extracurricular interests in sociology and global health.  During the summer of 2007, I studied abroad in Italy with faculty from the Emory Medical School, discussing medicine and compassion.  During the summer of 2008, I went on a Global Connections trip to Vietnam to study politics and health care; then I spent the rest of the summer as a nurse-midwife in Nigeria.  Earlier this summer I went to Honduras with the Global Medical Brigades, and I am currently in Bolivia doing quantitative research on the willingness to pay for ecological sanitation on a GHI research grant.

Please feel free to email this conference with any and all questions related to sociology at Emory.  I am particularly adept to respond to questions related to global health, double majoring, medicine (I was previously pre-med and a chemistry major), the PSRDA program or graduate classes.  I hope to hear from you soon, and good luck studying sociology at Emory!

Adrienne Patterson

Hey everyone! My name is Adrienne Patterson and I come from the Washington D.C. area. I am a senior and a Sociology major/French Studies minor.  My interests within sociology vary, but currently I’d like to focus on Race/Ethnic relations and Social Psychology especially within the contexts of different cultural environments (American, French European, and Japanese). I am planning to take a year off before applying for a graduate program in Sociology. (I’m still debating between going for a Masters or a Doctorate degree.)

The Sociology classes I have taken thus far:

  • SOC 101: Introduction to General Sociology (Gentry)
  • SOC 190S: Introduction to Human Socialization (Hegtvedt)
  • SOC 201: Organizations & Society (Archibald)
  • SOC 213: Sociology of the Family (Carrie)
  • SOC 245: Individual & Society (Scheuerman)
  • SOC 330: Mental Health & Well-Being (Keyes)
  • SOC 350: Sociology of Law (Mullis)
  • SOC 355WR: Social Research I (Mullis)

This Fall semester I will not be taking any Sociology courses at Emory since I will be studying abroad in Japan (I have also previously studied abroad in France.). However, some of the courses that I’ll be taking will count as Soc general credits. I’d be happy to assist you with your study abroad questions (especially, if like me, you are considering a program not specifically offered by the Sociology department).
