Emory Sociology annually presents an award to an outstanding senior for distinguished undergraduate scholarship in sociology. The award is made possible by a gift from the Sara Smith Sutker and Solomon Sutker Fund.
Emory Sociology prides itself on its excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching. Thus, each year it honors a faculty member whose teaching record is outstanding, both in terms of classroom evaluations and the mentoring of students. Another teaching award recognizes the graduate student who has demonstrated excellence in teaching his or her own undergraduate course.
This award is given in honor and memory of Maureen Blyler -- student, colleague, and friend to many in the department -- who died tragically in a cycling accident in 2002. Recognizing excellence in research as demonstrated in a scholarly work produced during the academic year, the award signifies the exceptional dedication, drive and vitality that Maureen embodied during her years at Emory.
